When St.John Bosco founded the Salesian congregation in 1859, his mission was clear and simple to be friend to youngsters who were poor, abandoned and at risk. Today this catholic religious organisation continues this work of the Lord in the spirit of its founder. Ever since there arrival in India in 1906, the Salesians are involved in the education and upliftment of poor, especially the youth. We do this by running schools, colleges, orphanages, vocational training centres, parish ministry, social ministry and so on.

God has blessed us with a good number of vocations all these years. Many young men have willingly answered God`s call to serve Him and His Church. We have a great responsibility of training them adequately for the mission, and continue Christ`s mission in today`s world.

Pre-Perpetual Course

“Preparation for final vows”  is an one month course for those Brothers who are due for perpetual profession next year. There are 48 young brothers attending this course.  10 brothers belong to our INM province. This course is an in-depth program that analyzes clearly the issues that young religious face and also provide ways to be aware and to solve those Issues. We are being given opportunity to analyse different dimensions of Religious life and challenges of Evangelical vows.

The young brothers also underwent an Intensive group process which unleashed the mind blocks and worries. Brothers are given opportunity to understand better themselves and to be aware of the situations where they live in. The young Brothers are well animated by the Resource persons Fr.Loddy Pires, sdb, Fr. Joe Mannath sdb, Fr. Joe Thannickal,sdb and Fr. Marcel Linkan sdb.  Sincere thanks to all the fathers who made it possible for us to attend this course.

A report on Don Bosco Vazhikaatti Civil Services Examination Coaching 2012

Don Bosco Vazhikaati Civil Services Examination Coaching (DBVCSEC) – 2012, is an innovative venture. It is a 10 days residential training program for the 11^th standard boys of Salesian Institutions and Parishes of Chennai and Vellore region conducted at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Santhome, Chennai. This training program is DBV’s dream project to create awareness among the youngsters in the rural areas about the feasibility of becoming value based administrators in India and to make them a capable youth in the society.

DBVCSEC – 2012 had 43 trainees from both Chennai and Vellore region Salesian institution and parishes.  They were selected from 125 students through a two different test processes consist of Psychometric and aptitude test.

DBVCSEC – 2012 was inaugurated on 1^st May 2012 at St. Bede’s AIHSS, Santhome, Chennai. 
Fr. Jayapalan Raphael, Provincial – Salesian Province of Chennai inaugurated the training program by handing over the membership card to the trainees.  Mr. Nandhakumar IRS, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamilnadu was invited as special guest and he delivered the keynote address to the candidates by sharing his own success story and the steps he took to achieve the current position.

The daily activities of the training program had Yoga practice in the morning, followed by Holy mass.  Soon after the breakfast “Inspiration hour” helped to motivate the trainees.  For the “Inspiration hour” eminent persons from various fields were invited.  Mr. Devaneyan, Human Rights Activist, Mrs. Divya Innocent, Officer in CM Cell, Mr. C.N. Ramdas, Retd. IAS Officer,
Mr. K.V. Gopalakrishnan, Retd. IPS, Mr. Thirugnanam IPS are the few among the prominent personalities.

The technical part of the training had two sessions at morning and afternoon.  The morning sessions was handled by the team of experts from Sathya IAS Academy & Prof. Kaliamoorthy’s team  explained about the General Studies (Current affairs, Indian History & Geography, General Science, Indian Politics & Policies, etc), the paper I syllabus of preliminary examination. During the afternoon session the paper II syllabus CSAT (English Comprehension, Basic Numeracy, Logical reasoning & analytical ability, and personality development Skills, General mental ability, etc.,) were handled by few experts of the particular field. Mr. Paranthaman, young scientist explained about the Emerging trends in Science & Technology to the trainees.

After the technical training session, trainees were allowed to play games to develop their physical activities. To revise the day to day learning’s trainees had study hour during which they finish off their daily assignments given during the sessions.  The day usually ends with Potential Identification hour, in which the talents of the trainees were enhanced through Quiz of General Knowledge & General Science and competitions like Street play on Social issues, Speech Competition on Social Evils, Collage and Poster making contest, Essay writing etc.,

Apart from the daily routine activities, trainees were taken to Adayar Cancer institute as field visit, where they were taught about the harmfulness of tobacco usage, etc., Also the trainees were taken out on one evening to beach and had party games just to relax from their serious coaching program.

On the final day of the training program the trainees were given test for 50 marks on the technical sessions they learnt through the training.  Also they were given an evaluation form to get the feedback of the 10 days training program.  The overall feedbacks from the trainees are they are able to understand the feasibility of taking up the Civil Services examination with confidence and they really wanted to continue this training program for the next 5 years.

Celebrate Scripture – 2012

Holy Spirit Church, Tagore Nagar, Puducherry – 8

The Vocational Bible School (VBS) began this year on 23^rd April with the title “Celebrate Scripture – 2012”. The inaugural function of this summer camp was held on 24^th April Fr. Tharsius, the parish priest was the chief guest. In his inaugural speech Fr. Tharsius instructed the children to read the Word of God daily and to make use of this opportunity to know God and His love more and more. The beneficiaries of this VBS, about 60 boys and girls were divided into four teams. This year the teams were labeled with the names of the Biblical mountains such as Sinai, Carmel, Tabor, and Calvary. The children were instructed everyday to take part actively in all the activities of the VBS with the consciousness that they are doing everything for Jesus. The camp lasted about two weeks from 23^rd of April to 6^th of May.

Morning Assembly: Every day the children assembled in front of the statue of St. John Bosco for the Morning Prayer and talk. The daily prayer services were animated by different teams. The Morning talks were given by the priests and the teachers. The team which got the highest points on the previous day hoisted the flag on the following day during the assembly.

Bible Classes: Every day the children were conducted with one hour and fifteen minutes of classes on prepared biblical themes. The students were divided into three categories according to their age. The students of classes 5^th to 8^th were taught the parables of Jesus and this helped the children to know more about the parables of Jesus and their core messages. And the students of classes 9^th to 12^th were taught the important and the core messages from the epistles of St. Paul. Every day the life histories of different saints were narrated to the children. And they were encouraged to memorize the bible verse every day. The daily notice boards were prepared by the children everyday basing on the theme of that particular day.

Competitions: In order to help our children to develop and exhibit their talents for religious activities every day the different competitions and biblical games were conducted. Children took part in them actively. The Marian day competitions, Bible day, Bible exhibitions, Bible Quiz, fancy dress and camp fire were the highlights of this VBS during which the children indeed displayed their creativity and spontaneity.

Picnic cum pilgrimage: The children were taken for an outing combined with pilgrimage on 4^th of May. During this outing the children paid a visit to the Sacred Heart Basilica, the church of Our Lady of Angel (White church) and the church of Our Lady of Lourds at Villianur, the renowned churches in Puducherry union territory. And for their lighter and fun moments during this outing they too spend few hours in a lake park namely ‘Usudueari’ and the children’s park of the Adithya Vidaysaram International School.

The Concluding and the valedictory Function: On 6^th May evening we had the concluding and the valedictory function of the VBS. The children exhibited their talents and skills to the parents and the gathering through the cultural programmes. All the camp participants were awarded with prizes for their active participation and involvement. In his speech Fr. Tharsius, the Parish priest encouraged and congratulated the children who took part in the VBS 2012. He instructed the children to keep up the fervor and the enthusiasm in learning the Word of God. With this the two weeks of VBS came to an end. Surely these 15 days were of fun and joyful to the children as they were learning the Word of God.

“Don Bosco Society” is well-known across the world for educating and transforming the lives of young people. Drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Don Bosco, they have built up a vast movement in India since 1906. The Don Bosco Society, Chennai, has educated thousands of poor boys and girls in a purposeful way by locating most of its schools in rural areas, and also by undertaking various projects for the benefit of ‘slum’ children within the city. There are many thousands more to be educated in the remote villages and slum dwellings.
