Chennai – Basin Bridge
History of the House
St. Joseph's Industrial Training centre stands tall today due to the advice of the then Archbishop of Madras - Mylapore, Dr. Louis Mathias SDB and Mgr. Mederlet who in 1951 identified the extensive plot of land near Basin Bridge called the "Harness and Saddle Factory" as ideal spot for an industrial school due to its proximity to major industrial installations. After persistent hard work the desired land was procured for the exchange of Shenoy Nagar land that Salesians had orginally purchased as the ocale for a technical school. A fine carpentry workshop a mechanical workshop (1951), a section for art and printing (1952) were soon setup along with a boarding. A compound wall was erected and the Provincial Office also moved in. The Aspirant Coadjutors who had remained for about two years in Tirupattur came over to Basin Bridge with their staff. The Printing Press grew and in 1968, was shifted as the SIGA Press at Kilpauk. The Central Government recognition to the Technical School was secured for trades such as Fitter & Turner (1973), Welder & Machnist (1977), Electrician & Draughtsman (1981), Electronic Mechanic (1987), Data Preparation and Computer Software course (1995), Mechanical Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning (1997), Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA) (1998).
Besides these formal courses mentioned above, functional (Non-Formal) courses such as Machine shop operation, Carpentry and Cabinet Making have also been conducted in the interest of the school dropouts and for those with very little of formal schooling. The institute has now introduced AutoCAD for the Draughtsman (Mechanical) trade, CNC training for the Machinist trade and Computer hardware for Electronic Mechanic trades. The Aim of St. Joseph
Industrial Training Centre is to impart an integral formation - Physical, Intellectual, Moral and Spiritual, to poor boys; in particular to prepare them for life through sound technical education. The house also has parrellel activities such as the parish, the Youth Centre, Social Work Centre and the school which have grown as integral elements of the institute over the years.
