St. Gabriel`s Higher Secondary School

At present, St. Gabriel’s Higher Secondary School has 1597 students on rolls, of which 248 are Catholics, 120 are Christians belonging to various denominations, 340 Muslims, and the rest are Hindus. There are 53 teaching staff, and 12 non-teaching staff, of which 45 are Catholics. Of the teaching staff, 38 are men and 15 women. Daily morning assembly followed by catechism and moral classes are held. First Friday Mass and Confessions are also a tradition together with the annual retreat for Catholic staff and students. The following groups: Scouts and Cubs, JRC, RSP, YCS, YCM, and Personality Development Cell are active in the School. Since most of the poor students are from the nearby slums, fee-concession is given to 130 students, while midday meals are also provided them.

Don Bosco Nursery and Primary School

Don Bosco Nursery and Primary School has a strength of 820 children, of which only 80 are Catholics. There are 21 teachers on the staff, of which 18 are Catholics. Daily morning assembly with a prayer, followed by catechism and moral classes are held. The Good Morning talk is given twice a week. First Friday Mass for Catholics and a prayer-service for non-Catholics are also conducted. There are 60 members in the Cubs’ Association that have weekly meetings, celebrate Christmas with the poor and help the School in maintaining discipline. The teachers are very dedicated and cooperative.

Don Bosco Youth Centre

Don Bosco Youth Centre has 310 boys on rolls, divided into various groups, such as, Seniors (25), Inters (30), Juniors (45) and Sub-Juniors (170), according to their age. Twenty-three are Catholics, while the rest are Hindus and Muslims. In addition, there are 40 Super Seniors, who while not forming part of the daily running of the Youth Centre, and its activities, nevertheless feel attached to it and contribute by advice and suggestions in running the programmes. Regular group meetings are conducted by the Salesian in charge of each group. Apart from organizing games, tournaments and numerous sports and cultural activities, the boys are also actively involved in Social Service. Catholic members are enabled to participate in Holy Mass, receive the Sacraments, and attend monthly novenas and annual retreats. There is also a Youth Centre Liturgical Choir. The number of Catholic boys has come down very low in recent years, due to migration of Catholic families from the area. Daily evening assembly & prayer, followed by short moral talks inspire all those who attend. The Youth Centre has received many laurels for its performance in sports and games and has well-trained troops of Cubs, Scouts and Rovers.

Dominic Savio Semi-Boarding and Night-Study Centre

The community has recently started a semi-boarding for 30 very poor students from the neighbouring slums. The students come early in the morning to study and attend school after breakfast provided in the semi-boarding. In the evening after school, they have some free time for games and recreation, after which, they are assisted in their studies till 8.00 p.m. They then go home and return the next day. The community also reaches out to 80 poor boys of the locality through the Night Study with the assistance of the Salesians and a lay teacher, sponsored by the community.

The community renders daily chaplaincy service to St. Anne’s Convent, Royapuram, and to the FMA Sisters at Tiruvottiyur, besides helping out in administering the Sacraments in and around the Vicariate whenever requested.

There is an active group of Past-pupils with nearly 160 registered life members and many ordinary members. In 2005 the Unit celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. The Executive Committee members meet every first Sunday of the month. They are animated by the Headmaster who is the local delegate. The past-pupils and their families come together once a year during Christmas. The Rector meets them occasionally for talks on Don Bosco. Some of the highlights of the Unit are: organizing Talent-Promotion Competitions; adoption of 15 poor students of St. Gabriel’s; runs a night-school for about 120 students; giving cash awards to students for general proficiency in studies and annual visit to the home for the aged.

Salesian Co-operators

The community animates 2 units of the Salesian Co-operators, 7 from St. Gabriel’s School and 15 from Don Bosco Nursery and Primary School. The Rector animates both the Units regularly on a monthly basis. The St. Gabriel’s Unit collects funds for uniforms and the education of poor boys; supervises night school and noon meals; conducts various competitions for the students, sponsoring prizes for the winners. Twice a year, they also visit the juvenile home and home for the aged. The Primary School Unit also make an annual visit to the juvenile home and to the home for the aged, for which they collect funds, usually during Christmas.
