Prevention of stress to maintain mental health

World Mental Health Day is universally observed on October 10 and this year, the theme was “Mental Health in the Workplace”. The Don Bosco Institute of Psychological Services - Niraivagam, organized a short program to commemorate this at The Citadel, Chennai. The program was attended by mental health professionals and remedial educators of Niraivagam.

    Rev. Fr. Edwin George, the Rector of Salesian Provincial House addressed the participants about Mental Health.  In his keynote address, the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. V. Sayee Kumar, Head of the Department, Human Resource Management of DG Vaishnav College spoke about how the nature of work influences the overall mental health of a person.

    Briefing on the definition of mental health as the state of well being of a person to meet the demands of normal life, Prof. Sayee Kumar elaborated on the working conditions and organizational structures for prevention of stress in employees. He also emphasised on the need for career guidance at the school level to help the students to choose a career suited to their competency and skills.

    After the session, the School counselors gathered for a meeting to discuss on the possibility of research in this field.


    Niraivagam – Don Bosco Institute of Psychological Services, established by the Salesians of Don Bosco, is a first of its kind state-of-the-art institute. Comprising of a world-class team, Niraivagam offers psychological and spiritual services to augment holistic growth of people across lifespan. The centre has 10 councillors whose services are available to 9 schools and 2 colleges within the group. There are 9 remedial teachers whose services are available in 7 schools. In addition to all this, Niraivagam conducts developmental training for professionals in any field, at their centre in The Citadel.
