Don Bosco Higher Secondary School
Educating the young, especially the poor and the marginalized, has always been the chief apostolate of the community. In the school, there are 2122 students, of whom 397 are Catholics, 125 Muslims, 116 Christians, while 1484 are Hindus. There are 57 teaching staff members, 46 of whom are Catholics. The school commences with the assembly every morning. The school has regular spiritual animation, like First Friday Mass, First Thursday Confessions and annual retreats for Catholic students of all classes. Catechism and Moral Science classes are held every day. Importance is given to co-curricular activities every Wednesday along with Sports and Games. Groups and Movements, such as Scouts, JRC, NSS and NCC are offered to students, in which they participate enthusiastically. There are regular staff meetings, seminars and annual retreats for the teachers. The school has excelled in academic performance. The higher secondary result was 89% pass against 79% the previous year, and the high school secured 94% pass against 89% the previous year. In 2002, a new building was constructed for the Higher Secondary section. The School is provided with adequate Computer, Physics and Chemistry labs. However the School library needs to be improved.
Don Bosco Nursery and Primary School
There are 450 students in the School, with 50 Catholics, from JKG to Std. V. There are 10 teaching staff members, 8 of whom are Catholics. Just as in the Higher Secondary School, here too, every day commences with the assembly. The school has regular First Friday Mass. Catechism and Moral Science classes are held everyday. Importance is given to co-curricular activities along with Sports and Games. Students participate enthusiastically in the Cubs’ Movement, and are specially trained in “Abacus” for numerical ability. There are regular staff meetings, seminars and annual retreats for the teachers.
Boarding
There are 44 boys in the boarding from Std. VIII to XI. The boarders have regular practices of piety like Holy Mass, Morning Prayer, personal prayer, rosary, night prayer and good night talks. They are also regular with the monthly recollection and commemorations of Mary, Help of Christians and of St. John Bosco and group masses. The number of boarders has increased from 22 last year to 44 this year. They have co-curricular activities, like band practice, dance classes, hobbies and games and sports, and also have an Integral Growth Assessment Card called “Boscovita”, to follow up their progress in studies and good behaviour. Several of them do well in their academic studies. In addition, the boys are well looked after as regards food and other needs.
Past-Pupils
The Past Pupils’ Unit of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Perambur, has been successful through the years. With the proper coordination of the teachers, the Unit remains an asset to the Institution. The Headmaster of the School animates it. There are 1120 registered life members, 12 Committee members and many ordinary members. Some of the activities of the unit are: Monthly Executive Committee meeting animated by the local delegate, a day of coming together with family members during Christmas, the Annual General Body meeting every year, participating in the main activities of the school, conducting Inter-School Volley Ball Tournament every year, felicitating the teachers on Teachers’ Day and Retirement Day, providing incentives to the student securing the first place in the School at government exams, helping 30 poor boys every year with Rs.1000 each, involvement in social service like visiting the Cancer Institute, conducting Blood Donation camps and other medical assistance for the poor, attending the Province monthly meetings regularly, as well as taking part in the Province Animation Day & Past Pupils Day.
Salesian Co-operators
The Salesian Cooperators’ Unit attached to this community is located at Risen Christ Church, Peravallur. There are 11 members who have taken the Promise and 1 aspirant. Meetings are conducted regularly every month. The Cooperators take up many activities in the Parish Church, such as animating the Feast of Assumption, Don Bosco Feast, Christmas, Easter, etc. They also offer scholarships to students of the parish, who score high marks in the final and government examinations. Aspirant Cooperators are given formation for two years before they take their Promise. The Promise Day is organized every year. Regular annual retreats are conducted.
