February 14, 2026, will remain a red-letter day in the annals of the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM). The occasion was rendered historic not only by the presence of the Rector Major, Rev. Fr. Fabio Attard, but also because he received the First Profession of the first Volunteer Con Don Bosco (CDB) in the Province—the first for the entire South Asian region.
The day began at SIGA – The Rinaldi Salesian Community, where the Rector Major led a meditation for the confreres. Drawing inspiration from the Gospel of the day, he invited the Salesians to accompany the young not through mere activism or control, but by witnessing to the nearness of the Kingdom of God. He emphasized that this is achieved through a prayerful presence, evangelical poverty, and compassionate action. His words gently yet firmly recalled the confreres to the very heart of their vocation.
Following breakfast, Fr. Fabio met with the Rectors and leaders of the Province. During this interaction, he emphasized the centrality of Faith as the foundation of all apostolic endeavours. He urged the Salesians not merely to love Don Bosco, but to truly know him, underscoring the need for a profound understanding of the Salesian charism to shape both identity and mission.
Refencing the words of Pope Francis, he noted that we are not merely in an era of change, but experiencing a "change of era"—a profound rupture rather than a simple transition. He encouraged the leaders to remain positive, noting that this is a beautiful time to creatively live out consecrated life. Just as Don Bosco responded to the challenges of his time moved by the Spirit, Fr. Fabio challenged the Salesians to be original witnesses rather than "photocopies" of the past. He further stressed that formation happens within the lived context of community and mission, expressing his staunch belief that the congregation thrives when led by "men of God"—a quality he noted, citing Fr. Dominic Veliath, that India rightfully expects from Salesians.
At 11:30 a.m., the Rector Major celebrated the Holy Eucharist for the Salesian Family, during which the first CDB of India made his first profession. In a moving homily, Fr. Fabio reflected on the "desert" as a privileged place of encountering God—an experience that enables us to accompany those in desolation, especially the young, toward divine closeness.
With deep conviction, he reminded the faithful: “When we give, we increase what we have.” The celebration was a profound moment of grace as the Rector Major invoked God’s abundant blessings upon the Province and the entire Salesian Family. This milestone serves as a renewed call for all to live the Salesian vocation with authenticity, depth, and joyful generosity.
