Chennai, April 27th, 2025 – A significant step towards fostering inclusive education was undertaken by Niraivagam - Don Bosco Institute of Psychological Services, Chennai, and successfully conducted a comprehensive three-day workshop on Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) at Don Bosco, Egmore. The intensive program, held from 24th to 26th April, brought together a dedicated group of parents, passionate teachers, and experienced special educators, all eager to deepen their understanding and enhance their support for students with SLDs.
The workshop boasted a panel of esteemed resource persons: Ms. Manisha, Mr. Ashwin, Ms. Gracy, and Mrs. Arthi Srinivasan from Nandavanam, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and practical insights into the multifaceted world of SLDs.
The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr. Xavier Pakiam SDB, Rector and Correspondent of Don Bosco, Egmore. His empowering keynote address resonated deeply with the participants, igniting a sense of collective responsibility and inspiring everyone to approach the challenges and opportunities of supporting students with SLDs with renewed vigour and empathy. Fr. Xavier Pakiam emphasized the importance of creating a nurturing and understanding environment with the empowerment of Parents, Teachers and Special Educators where every child can thrive and reach their full potential.
Over the three days, the workshop delved into critical aspects of SLDs. Participants gained a thorough understanding of the various types of learning disabilities, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, behaviour management strategies, study techniques, brain gym, focus and attention unravelling the neurological underpinnings and common indicators associated with each. The sessions were designed to equip attendees with practical strategies for the early identification of SLDs, both within the classroom and at home. Resource persons shared valuable techniques for observation and understanding the nuances of learning patterns that might signal an underlying difficulty.
A significant focus was placed on effective intervention strategies and creating inclusive learning environments. Participants explored evidence-based teaching methodologies, appropriate accommodations, and the crucial role of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Throughout the workshop, the emphasis on collaboration between parents, teachers, and special educators remained paramount. Interactive sessions, case study analyses, testimonials from parents, parallel classroom engagement of the children of the participants and group discussions provided a platform for participants to share experiences, exchange ideas, and build a stronger network of support. The resource persons skilfully addressed parental concerns, empowering them to become effective advocates for their children's unique educational needs.
The valedictory function marked the culmination of three days of intensive learning and engagement. The institute was honored to have Dr. B.S. Virudhugirinathan, Care-IBS, as the keynote speaker. His insightful address provided a powerful concluding message, reinforcing the importance of ongoing learning and collaborative efforts in the field of special education. Dr. Virudhugirinathan then graciously presented participation certificates to all attendees and appreciation certificates to the Resource Persons, acknowledging their commitment and dedication to understanding and supporting students with SLDs.
The workshop organized by Niraivagam at Don Bosco, Egmore, stands as a testament to the commitment of both institutions towards creating a more inclusive and supportive educational ecosystem. By empowering parents, teachers, and special educators with the necessary knowledge and skills, this initiative promises to make a tangible difference in the lives of students with Specific Learning Disabilities, enabling them to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential.
